STRIVING FOR THE PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE

Water Selection

Filtered brews are roughly 98.5% water, with espresso near 90%. Hard tap water often masks delicate notes in single-origin beans. Using a quality water filter will immediately improve the transparency and definition of your coffee.

The Grinder

Precision is key. Sharp, maintained burrs provide the uniform particle size needed for balanced extraction. Regular cleaning is vital to prevent oily buildup from going stale or causing premature wear on the blades.

Measuring

True excellence requires accuracy. Utilize a digital scale to measure both your dry grounds and total water weight every single time.

Temperature Control

Brew using water fresh from the boil. High-quality specialty roasts benefit from high heat, which efficiently pulls out the complex sugars and aromatic compounds hidden within the bean.

Refined Extraction

It is generally safer to lean toward higher extraction than to stop early. Under-extracted coffee tends to be sour and thin, while pushing extraction further unlocks sweetness. Bright acidity brings life to the cup, but balanced sugar makes it enjoyable.

Hygiene

Residual coffee oils oxidize quickly and become rancid. Thoroughly scrub every tool that comes into contact with brewed coffee after each session to keep your profile clean.

Use these recipes as a starting point—adjust parameters to suit your palate.

GUIDE TO THE AEROPRESS

Dose: 17g | Liquid: 240g boiling water

Thoroughly pre-warm your brewer.

Combine 17g of grounds with an initial 50g of water and initiate the timer.

Once the clock hits 0:20, fill the chamber with the remaining water to reach 240g.

Provide five soft stirs to agitate the bed.

At the 1:45 mark, perform five additional gentle stirs.

Secure the cap, invert onto a sturdy vessel, and plunge steadily until the air hiss occurs.

BREWING WITH THE HARIO V60

Dose: 18g | Water: 300g boiling | Target Finish: 2:30 – 3:00

Wash the paper filter with hot water to remove woody flavors and warm the carafe; discard the runoff.

Add exactly 18g of medium-fine coffee.

Pour 60g of water, ensuring all grounds are wet, and let bloom for 30 seconds.

At 0:30, pour until the scale reads 150g.

At 0:55, increase the total weight to 200g.

At 1:20, continue pouring to 250g.

At 1:45, finish your final pour at 300g.

Swirl the brewer lightly to flatten the bed and allow the water to drain through.

ESPRESSO PARAMETERS

Dose: 0.5g less than basket limit | Yield: ~42g liquid | Time: 25 – 30 seconds

Check your specific basket capacity and dose 0.5g less to provide necessary headroom (for example, 19.5g for a 20g basket).

Maximize consistency by leveling the bed and tamping with even pressure.

Aim for a yield that is at least double your dry weight (approximately 42g of liquid).

Adjust your grind so the total flow time falls between 25 and 30 seconds.
